As you can see, from your accommodation at our campsite, the hiking possibilities in our region are endless. Between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the ocean, amateur and experienced hikers alike will be won over by the diversity of landscapes and exceptional viewpoints. The flora and fauna are remarkable.

In addition to the unmissable coastal path and the famous Rhune ascent, don’t miss :

  • The Jaizkibel, a lovely walk on the Spanish side. Follow the meandering coastline overlooking the ocean. Not a house in sight, nothing but dense forest, flowering moorland, meadows, rocks, waves, blue, green, grey… wild! On the way back, stop off in the pretty village of Hondarribia / Fontarrabie for pintxos in some of the region’s best tapas bars.
  • The Mondarrain, a family hike with breathtaking views of both the mountains and the Basque coast. Slopes covered with heather and broom, encounters with sheep, pottoks and birds of prey… On the way back, enjoy a gourmet break in the pretty village of Itxassou.
  • The Col d’Ibardin, just over the Spanish border and better known as a shopping area, is also a good starting point for several easy family hikes. The tour of Lake Xoldokogaina is an option accessible to all, with lovely views.

Cycling in the Basque Country

Want to discover the Basque Country’s must-sees from a different angle? Choose a bike!

Our campsite with swimming pool in the Basque Country is located on the edge of the Vélodyssée, which links Bayonne to Hendaye on its Basque section. Leave your car on site to avoid traffic jams and parking problems, then set off to discover the Basque coast by bike. It’s both a more environmentally-friendly and more pleasant way to enjoy this magnificent coastline.

Experienced cyclists can tackle the nearby Pyrenean passes and immerse themselves in the Basque countryside. For thrill-seekers, a mountain bike outing in the mountains will prove an exciting challenge.

The options are varied and suitable for all levels!

If you’d like to hire equipment, we have special rates with our partner (contact us for details).

The ascent of La Rhune, the highest mountain in the Basque Country, culminating at 905 m, offers breathtaking 360° panoramic views over the whole of the Basque Country, on both the French and Spanish sides. A must for any curious hiker.

Whether you choose to set off on foot from Ascain, Olhette or Sare, the trails will take you from lush green fields to rocky areas. At every turn, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over the Basque coast, and sometimes as far as the Landes.

For those who prefer a more leisurely stroll, it is also possible to discover this exceptional setting on board the little cogwheel train leaving from the Col de Saint-Ignace in Sare. Remember to book your seats in advance, especially during the school holidays.

Whichever way you choose to reach the summit, you’ll have the chance to meet the pottoks, the wild horses that are emblematic of the Basque country, before taking a well-deserved break in one of the ventas for a meal or a cool sangria.
